On April 26, 1986 at 01:23 (EET), one of the largest and most devastating nuclear accidents in history took place in Chernobyl, northern Kiev Oblast, Ukraine (Socol 2015). The disaster involved an explosion and fire in an operating nuclear power plant that released dangerous radioactive gas into the air in the surrounding areas.
