I lived in Naples for 16 years and I can clearly recall the moment when some phantasmagorical and colourful figures started appearing – almost overnight – on the city walls. First, there were flying chicks and coffins. Later on, maimed bodies with technological inserts came along. These small and unexpected figures were sometimes emerging from the base of a circular stone bench. At other times, they were huge figures instead – standing out on the shafts of an abandoned flyover in order to draw the attention to the architectural havoc and problematic commercial speculation in the urban landscape. Later on they were shaped by fire and washed by water on terracotta tiles, or entrusted to the ephemerality of thin tissue paper.

The work by cyop&kaf is an integral part not only of the Neapolitan urban fabric but also of the city’s collective imagination. cyop&kaf is a multifaceted and versatile artist who likes experimenting and confronting with different media and various techniques. He is a polyphonic entity who defines himself as a multitude that paints. He is politically and socially active, as shown by the subjects he deals with as well as by his constant presence in the territory and his activism. He pays attention to his surroundings and the dynamics that unfold there, such as the issue of waste, urban havoc and property speculation, quarrels and shortcomings of the municipal administration, the shortage of lodgings and the need to occupy flats and create cultural and social spaces.

His critical eye has often lingered over commodities and their shiny allure, which blinds our senses making us indifferent to what is around us. Yet, it is always possible to breathe life, thanks to the connection between the fields related to the ‘self’, to the ‘other’ and to the ‘us’: their intersection is where the ‘political’ originates from. This is not something abstract but the dimension where the human being becomes aware of his/her isolation and reacts with care and everyday attention to the surrounding environment.

According to this view, cyop&kaf also attributes to art the social/socialising function of creating contact with people, thus considering it as a gift. The idea of contact with people is also linked with the peculiar meaning given to the word ‘subversion’ – a moment of exchange, when the artist tells the intrigued passers-by that the reason why he paints in the street is simply passion. A revelation often devastating and thus subversive, which breaks the well-established dynamics of art weaved to profit. When art is considered as communication, it becomes advertisement. Instead, art is something before which we need to stop and think over.

For years cyop&kaf has been painting especially in the Quartieri Spagnoli, in the old town centre, ‘paying homage to this area’ as he himself says, in an everyday exercise of listening to stories, respecting silence, learning to ask the right questions, studying the changes and trying to transform and improve it. Recently (in July and again in October) he organised an open air exhibition-event, where the participants were given a map, encouraged to lose themselves while searching for the over 200 pieces.
