Blood and Data Flows: in my panties

Blood and data flows is an artistic-scientific project which explores the relationships between bodies, smartphones, menstrual cycles and period-tracking apps through experimental film and poetry. Drawing on experiences, feelings and data gathered during my fieldwork on menstrual apps, I aim to alternatively engage with the material-discursive manifestations of blood and data flows. Juxtaposition, rearrangement, reinterpretation, recontextualization and appropriation are important elements in this work as they allow for the creation of new knowledge.
In my panties is an auto-ethnographic, audiovisual collage which is structured in three acts: arrival, confrontation and parting. The interference noises in the second act, that have been extracted from interview recordings, underline the agency of smartphones. Techniques such as defamiliarization, deceleration, turning and cycling seek to expand the temporal space between the spectator's perception and cognition and thus give room for re-consideration and reflection. Instead of offering answers, my work raises questions regarding our bodies and engagement with digital technologies and data: What are the consequences of digitizing menstrual blood flows? What role do visibility and materiality play when investigating blood and data flows? How do intimate relationships between humans and digital devices such as smartphones shape the understanding of our bodies and selves?

Blood and data flows es un proyecto artístico-scientífico, que explora las relaciones entre cuerpos, smartphones, ciclos menstruales y apps menstruales a través de film y poesía experimental. Basándose en las experiencias, sentimientos y datos recogidos durante mi trabajo de campo sobre apps menstruales, mi objetivo es la indagación alternativa de lo material-discursivo de los flujos de sangre y datos. En este trabajo, la yuxtaposición, reordenación, reinterpretación, recontextualización y apropiación son elementos claves porque permiten la creación de nuevos conocimientos.
In my panties es un collage audiovisual y auto-etnográfico estructurado en tres actos: llegada, confrontación y partida. Los ruidos de interferencia del segundo acto han sido extraídos de grabaciones de entrevistas y subrayan la agencia de los smartphones. Técnicas como la defamilarización, desaceleración, giros y ciclos buscan la expansión del espacio temporal entre percepción y cognición por el/la espectador/a y dejar lugar para reconsideración y reflexión. En vez de ofrecer respuestas, mi obra plantea cuestiones en cuanto a nuestros cuerpos e interacción con tecnologías digitales y datos: ¿Cuáles son las consecuencias de digitalizar flujos de sangre menstrual? ¿Cuál es el papel de la visibilidad y lo material cuando se investigan los flujos de datos y sangre? ¿Cómo influyen las relaciones entre humanos y dispositivos digitales como smartphones en el entendimiento de nuestros cuerpos e identidades?

Johanna Levy is a trained molecular biologist and early stage researcher within the GRACE (Gender and Cultures of Equality) project, a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 program. In her research, Johanna focuses on the use and design of menstrual applications in order to find out more about their role in processes of strengthening and questioning of gender and additional sociocultural in/equalities. Johanna is also a PhD candidate in Gender Studies at the universities of Granada, Spain and Bologna, Italy.
