Between the body and the soul; between materiality and immateriality; between life and death; between everything an nothing or...

...Between two Nothings...

...lies breath: the air that flows into our bodies and exits to go on its travel around the world, in order to enter other bodies or to join hurricanes.

Something intangible but existing, invisible but fundamental to existence.

According to Ancient Greek philosophy, breath is the element that unites our body -the physical aspect of our existence- with our psyche and our mind; it is the element that links our existence with the cosmos. For Aristotle life is inhaling and exhaling.

Breath is a means of controlling and altering our consciousness: by altering our breathing rhythm we can change our mood and train our mind. This common knowledge has saturated religious practices all around the world; it has prevailed in Oriental philosophy and has influenced contemporary thinkers, like Antonin Artaud, who stated that "every mental movement, every feeling, every leap in human affectivity has an appropriate breath".

So, to represent breath is to represent the Universe and the Individual.

But how?

How can you create something out of nothing?

How can you illustrate the unseen?

Fabíola Scaranto in "Entre dois nadas" -between two nothings- traps her breath into a soap bubble, thus making it visible.

The infinitesimally thin walls of the bubble turn into a fragile container of life -almost as fragile as the human body. Her breathless body becomes extremely vulnerable; but she lets go of her task before she collapses from asphyxia.

As she loses her breath, we subconsciously hold ours -somehow imitating her. Therefore, by altering our breathing rhythm, we alter our consciousness. Then, we follow her as she tests her limits -the limits of life and death, of the material body and the immaterial aspect of Being.

Holding her trapped breath in hand, it seems as if she touches the edges of her soul and looks inside of it. She caresses the bubble like a newborn baby that used to form part of her but has just been delivered; it is another individual now.

Her breath turns into a soft plastic material, that she can stretch, divide in pieces, or put back together- changing its shape and image constantly.

She finally breaks the bubble and sets her breath free, to let it return to the air and its invisible state; so that it continues its journey around the world...

...until it reaches us and enters our bodies.

Então, representar a respiração é representar o Universo e o Individuo.
